Sima Guang was a Prime Minister and an outstanding historian of the Northern Song dynasty.

 司马光是北宋时期的宰相，也是一位杰出的史学家。

His masterwork Historical Events Retold as a Mirror for Government (Zi Zhi Tong Jian) was well-known all over the world.

他的代表作《资治通鉴》闻名于世。

As a little boy, he was clever and diligent. 

 司马光小时聪明又好学。

Once he was playing with his friends in the backyard.

有一次他和小伙伴们在后院玩。

  A child climbed to play on the rockery, and accidentally  fell into a large vat filled with water.  

一个小孩爬到假山上去玩，不小心掉进了一个装满水的大缸里。

The children were scared, some started crying and others ran to seek help from the adults. 

孩子们都吓坏了，有的哭了起来，有的跑去找大人帮忙。

But Sima Guang realized that the only way to save the trapped child was to break the vat as soon as possible.

但司马光意识到想要救出被困的小孩，唯一的办法就是尽快打破水缸。

So he picked up a big stone nearby and threw it hard at the vat. With a loud crash, the vat was broken and the water flowed out quickly. 

于是，他捡起附近的一块大石头，用力地朝水缸砸去。“哗啦”一声，缸破了，水涌了出来。

   Then the child was saved.   

    那个孩子得救了。
